Frequently Asked Questions

Verified against Idaho Code, VoteIdaho.gov, and the Idaho Secretary of State.

Voting Basics
What ID do I need to vote?

Idaho requests photo ID at the polls. Accepted forms: a current Idaho driver's license or state ID card, a U.S. passport or federal photo ID, a tribal photo ID card, or a concealed weapons license issued by an Idaho county sheriff. If you don't have an accepted photo ID, you can still vote by signing a Personal Identification Affidavit at the polls. You do not need a REAL ID to vote. (Idaho Code §34-1113)

Can I register on Election Day?

Yes. Idaho allows same-day voter registration at your polling place and during early voting. Bring a valid photo ID and proof of your current residential address (utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, or government document showing your name and Idaho address). You can register and vote in the same visit. The deadline for online registration is 11 days before the election. (VoteIdaho.gov)

What are polling hours?

All Idaho polls are open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM local time on Election Day. Some polls may open at 7:00 AM at the discretion of the county clerk. Idaho is split between Mountain and Pacific time zones — check your county for which zone applies. If you are in line when polls close at 8:00 PM, you have the right to cast your ballot. (Idaho Code §34-1101)

I moved. Where do I vote?

You vote based on your current residential address. If you moved within the same county, you can update your registration at the polls on Election Day with a photo ID and proof of your new address. If you moved to a new county, you need to register in the new county — same-day registration is available at the polls. You must have resided in Idaho for at least 30 days before the election. (VoteIdaho.gov)

Absentee & Mail-in Voting
Can I vote by mail?

Yes. Any registered Idaho voter can request an absentee ballot — no excuse is required. Request your absentee ballot from your county clerk at least 11 days before the election. You can apply online at VoteIdaho.gov (requires an Idaho driver's license or state ID number), by mailing a paper application, or in person at your county clerk's office. Return your voted ballot by mail or to your county elections office by 8:00 PM on Election Day. (Idaho Code §34-1002)

Can I track my absentee ballot?

Yes. Track your absentee ballot status at VoteIdaho.gov. If you requested an absentee ballot but decide to vote in person, you must surrender your absentee ballot at the polls before receiving a regular ballot. Do not mail your ballot and also vote in person. (VoteIdaho.gov)

What if my absentee ballot is rejected?

Idaho does not have a statewide process to "cure" (fix) a rejected absentee ballot. Some counties may provide a signature verification process — contact your county clerk for specifics. The signature on your ballot envelope is compared to the one on file with the state.

Primaries & Party Affiliation
How do Idaho primaries work?

Idaho uses a closed primary system. Each political party can decide whether to allow voters outside the party to participate. Currently, the Republican Party holds a closed primary — only registered Republicans can vote in it. The Democratic Party allows both registered Democrats and unaffiliated voters to participate. All registered voters can vote on nonpartisan ballot items (judges, bonds, levies) regardless of party. (Idaho Code §34-904A)

I'm unaffiliated. Can I vote in the primary?

Unaffiliated voters can vote in the Democratic primary without changing registration. To vote in the Republican primary, you must affiliate with the Republican Party — you can do this at the polls on Election Day by declaring your affiliation to a poll worker. After the primary, this affiliation is recorded in your voter record. You can also vote on all nonpartisan items on the ballot. (Idaho Code §34-411A)

Can I change my party affiliation?

If you are already registered with a party and want to switch to a different party or become unaffiliated, you must do so no later than the 12th Friday before the primary election (March 13, 2026 for the May 19 primary). Submit a signed form to your county clerk. However, if you are currently unaffiliated, you can affiliate with any party at the polls on primary Election Day. Party affiliation does not affect your ability to vote in the general election. (Idaho Code §34-411A, VoteIdaho.gov)

Accessibility & Special Situations
What if I have a disability?

All Idaho polling places are required to be accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Accessible voting equipment is available at every polling location. If you need additional assistance, contact your county clerk's office before Election Day to arrange accommodations. You can also bring any person of your choice to assist you in the voting booth, except your employer or a union officer/agent. (ADA, Idaho Code §34-1108)

I'm a college student. Where do I vote?

You vote where you consider your primary residence. Idaho college students can register and vote at their campus address or their home address — but not both. Whichever address you register at is where you vote. If you're registered at your campus address, vote there. You must be an Idaho resident to vote in Idaho elections. (VoteIdaho.gov)

I'm military or overseas. How do I vote?

Register and request ballots through the Federal Voting Assistance Program at FVAP.gov. Idaho accepts the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) for both voter registration and absentee ballot requests. Ballots can be returned by mail, fax, or email to your county clerk's office. Contact your county clerk for specific return instructions. (VoteIdaho.gov, FVAP.gov)
